Gary Taylor
Candidate for US House of Representative Texas CD-21
I am running for Texas Congressional District 21. One of the main reasons I have chosen to run is to help in building a better future for my children and grandchildren—indeed, a better future for all of us, throughout this nation. But not only a better future, I think we need a better now, too.

While I am not young, I have children and grandchildren who are. I am deeply concerned about their future and the future of the country. I want to do all I can to help in giving them, and all of us, particularly those who are just trying to make their way in this world, a brighter future to look forward to. I believe I have some ideas to help in achieving that brighter future for all of us. And believing it can happen, gives us a better now. Let me add that I am working very hard on messaging that reaches those who are not already in the choir, so to speak. We must win some of them over and convince them that we can make their lives better, too.

I have a master's degree in mathematics. As an undergrad I had a double major - mathematics and music. I taught for a total of 28 years, 25 in public schools. I also played in bands and wrote musicals. But most importantly, for the position I seek, I have been a serious student of history and philosophies that have the needs of all at their core. I believe that the years of teaching, and the years of studying, helped prepare me for this position. Also, the years of raising my family with my beloved late wife, my high school sweetheart, helped prepare me for this position. As teachers, we never had a lot of money, but we were happy. I see that it is getting more and more difficult for young families to simply make ends meet nowadays. It was difficult when we did it, but I believe it is much more difficult now.

This is always so difficult for me, partially because I can't narrow it down to three, but also because I have a single, more general, philosophy that serves me through all of the important issues. I will list these three, very general goals: (1) Building an economy that works for all, one that leaves no one out, (2) building a more perfect union, i.e., a much less extremely divided country, and (3) continuously working to end all oppression. More specifically: (1) I would do everything in my power to immediately put the brakes on ICE. (2) I will also work to save Social Security, and improve it for the generations to come. To me, it should be a major issue for everyone under 55. I fear many are not aware of how important it is. Saving it is not so much for those who already have it, but for the generations to come. I have written extensively on how it benefits us all from cradle to grave, and helps prevent depressions. (3) I will begin the work on overhauling our healthcare system so that it works for everyone. This will require a huge effort, so we must begin the process immediately.

Once again, a difficult answer, partly because I write songs and have written several that are appropriate for a campaign. One is specifically about civil rights heroes, focusing on John Lewis, A. Philip Randolph, and Martin Luther King, Jr.
Having said that, let me now choose a song that should be more familiar to everyone: We Shall Overcome. It was the theme song of the Civil Rights movement, and is so appropriate to our situation today. It's beautiful, and can easily be sung together. It might not fit the definition of a walk out song, but it is a meaningful song, and one that pulls people together.

I absolutely DO NOT support anything at all about ICE in the United States. It shouldn't exist. My work to fight it has, so far, been in working on messaging as part of my campaign. As my platform is dedicated to constantly working to end all oppression, the recent actions of ICE horrify me. They present us with an emergency situation of violent oppression that we must quickly search for solutions. I am open to suggestions on how we fight this. My own efforts have been concentrated on the ways of getting more people on our side in this struggle.

I do not support this use, but I have not done much, specifically, to fight it. I have worked more generally. Again, my focus has been on crafting the message to bring the numbers to our side. To defeat the oligarchs and the money, we must greatly outnumber their side. It amazes me how many people vote against their own best interests because they are misinformed about us, and how we can improve their lives.

I absolutely do not support the development of these centers in Hays County. My answer to this is similar to my previous answer. Let me add, that as a candidate, I find that there are not enough hours in the day to do all that is needed. So, once again, I am focused on the messaging that can bring people to our way of thinking. Ultimately, I see it as an absolute must. To win on the issues, we need huge majorities in the House and the Senate. I am doing all in my power to make that happen.

Yes, I do. I also believe that this is such a sad situation, and many people are being hurt by it. I think care must be taken to not create antisemitism here at home. I absolutely believe the genocide must stop. I also believe we must try to understand the feelings of the Jewish community in America, and assure them that we care about them. Thankfully, many of them also support the Palestinians. But many of them are also feeling hated. This is not an easy issue, other than having the hope and belief that all violence should stop, anywhere and everywhere.
